I’m all right, nobody worry bout me
Over the last few weeks I’ve started to get a little annoyed with my job, mainly because the work wasn’t terribly fulfilling and communication in general was lacking amongst the employees. I stuck around, though, doing my best to fill in where there was no one trying to create solutions, enjoying my office and the relatively low stress compared to my job in Arkansas, while at the same time ordering a portfolio cover with the intention of looking around for a better opportunity.
And this morning, that opportunity bit me in the rear. The partners of the company decided to lay off/let go/fire me, whatever you want to call it, because they decided the need “isn’t for a designer but more a fulltime production person, which we can find elsewhere.” I took that to mean “outsourcing,” or freelancing, only to find out later they’re hiring the freelancing production artist who has been in the office the last few weeks helping out with odd projects. Swell.
So now instead of spending a few nights here and there putting my stuff together and sending it out secretly, I have a month to devote 100% of my time to it without the secrecy. After cleaning out my office tonight and seeing just how little work I’ve done over the last five months that’s portfolio-worthy, I know this is for the best.
When you stay at a job for the material things alone, it’s not really very fulfilling. I feel a bit sheepish about it all, considering I have publicly bragged (on this blog) about the computer I was using (and the office, etc., etc.,), but now I think it was simply because there wasn’t much else to brag about.
And on to the next adventure…

So sorry to hear about this, but another door always opens if you’re looking for it. Sounds like they simply wanted to save money, so don’t take it personally. Post your portfolio at Creative Hotlist and take a look at the job postings there while you’re beefing up your portfolio. Enjoy your freelancer status… it’s not all that bad, actually!

Hope it works out for the best. With your skillz, I’m sure your search will be short.
Or, you could go into full-time Photoshopping for Worth1000.com contests. Remember when you distorted that picture of me in the salmon-colored polo shirt for my birthday in college?

Susan - thank you for your kind words. I thought of that Joseph Campbell quote that you love while writing this post. And if I can keep steady work freelancing, I would love to do it fulltime. Nothing beats working in pjs with kitties!
Justin- hehehe. you’re lucky, actually. in high school i put a guy friend’s head on a mermaid body and printed a bunch of flyers of it :-P
