I finally got my Texas license plates, after the sticker shock of paying $176!!! And that was after paying $40 for the inspection and emissions test. Turns out that Texas charges new residents a “new resident tax” of $99!
The one amusing part of the whole ordeal was when I watched one of the employees (i think her name was LaKeishia) pick up a bottle of lotion, casually unscrew the top, pause, yell, “EIGH-TY NAANE!”, then put the lotion to her nose and smell it.

Massachusetts’s new resident’s tax on cars is $500. So quit you’re griping ;) at least you’re not freezing your toosh off, and you get to eat at Sonic whenever you want…no fair…

Heather, as a Tennessean, I found it incredibly emotional to have to remove my TN tags and put on AR ones after Carolina and I got married. It wasn’t the cost that bothered me. It was the recognition that I’m really a resident of a different place now. Makes me miss TN. Did you feel the same?

Mark,
I was upset about getting AR tags and happy to get rid of them, honestly. There’s just a stigma about Arkansas that’s, how shall we say–lacking intelligence? But even then, my dismay at getting AR tags wasn’t compounded with a $200 fee, either.
And yes, Karise. I figure I have no room to gripe if your tax is $500! But then, that’s why they call it Taxachusetts, right?
