The Layoffs that Suck and Other Things
This week was insane because I was working at a fairly large agency that’s part of Omnicom, the corporation that owns some of the best ad agencies in the word like BBDO Worldwide, DDB Worldwide, TBWA Worldwide, Goodby Silverstein & Partners and GSD&M, who basically produce all the commercials and ads you come into contact with daily. This particular place focused mostly on promotional in-store advertising for Cingular, 7Eleven and Blackberry (among others). I’ll just say it was fun (as much fun as a 14 hour day can be, because that’s how agencies function), and there’s been an unofficial mention that they’d like to hire me in the studio (which is mostly production work…), but we’ll see what that is if it happens. I’m completely honored, but not so sure how one could stare at the Cingular orange all day every day for months on end…?
In other news the woman I interviewed with at the stationery place is “no longer with the company.” Or so I was told in a reply to my email about an invoice that is yet unpaid. I’m a little curious what happened there, but I’ll be freelancing for them again this week and maybe I’ll find out. Since it’s a really small company I’m thinking that what I have going on is better than the volatility of those small mom and pop, 5 person organizations. Just for the sake of sanity.
Speaking of which, Joe was laid off from his design job in Little Rock. It was a money issue, so not his fault, but I’m sure he’s battling demons since this happened the same time last year. Now atleast, I can empathize. Hopefully he’ll be able to find a job in a bigger market where there’s more work to be had when that stuff happens. Josh went to Little Rock to keep him company, so I’m battling it alone this weekend with the cats. Yipee! I would have gone but had a new client meeting today and an assignment scheduled for Monday.
The new client today has a really fun project for me that I’ve never done before– a user interface (or UI) for a software program! He basically has a really unique concept with great functionality but needs the interface to sell it– and has some really big companies interested in the product which could mean sweet royalties for me. (It’s no risk on my part, since I’m just a vendor and not an investor.)
So blah, blah, blah, if you got to the end of this post congratulations. I hope I haven’t sounded like a complete egotistical jerk. I like what I do and I like that I can be picky about the job I choose. I started wondering the other day if I was rejecting offers solely because of a fear that getting laid off would happen again, but I don’t think that’s it. I think I just haven’t found the right fit yet, and if something comes along that is right, I’ll know it’s something I just can’t pass up. In the meantime, I really love freelancing and could do this for a long time. I think it suits me more than anything I’ve ever done, atleast in my inexperienced 25 years.
One other thing: super congratulations to all the friends of mine who are welcoming babies this year: Hillary/Brian, Jesse/Elaine, Andrea/Aaron, and Karise/Carrington. There are probably more I don’t know of, but I wish all of you guys the best. When I’m sleeping in late, I’ll think of ya.

Yay, I made it to the end of the post! Kidding. Sounds like we are working through the same stuff re: business. I’d love to hear what you’re up to in more detail (ie, email me :).

Hee! No babies for me :). I’m OK with that for, oh, another 3 years or so….
Sleeping in rocks!

Amy… you are more productive on a day you consider “relaxing” than I am in an entire week! (Atleast, my house is almost NEVER clean—the way I’d like it…)
And in my book, “sleeping in” is defined as atleast until noon! Do you still qualify? :)
