Victory

Last night Jomo got a ticket to see our mutual favorite team, the Phoenix Suns, destroy the Rockets. Tomorrow night I have a ticket to see them perform a similar feat against the supposed best team in the NBA, the Dallas Mavericks. On Friday, they will do it again to the best team in the East, the Detroit Pistons.

I’m giddy with how good they can be right now. This is the best part of being a sports fan - the anticipation of seeing your team do the “…suddenly”.

Let me explain, you know there’s that feeling in books, movies, TV, music, videogames, sports, whatever, when there’s a lull, or a setback, and everything looks on edge…and then, suddenly, inexplicably even, everything has changed.

Living in Dallas I have to deal with friends who just marvel at the Mavericks and their winning ways. Smug and arrogant, knowing that this is “their year” and blaming last year’s collapse on the officiating, and laughing at how easy it was to beat Phoenix in six games, while conveniently ignoring the fact that both Amare and Kurt Thomas were hurt. The hubris.

I will be there tomorrow night wearing orange, laughing after the final buzzer sounds, and waiting fervently for what May and June will bring.

5 songs that I’m listening to right now that make me think of victory -

1. Black Grease, by The Black Angels
2. Incinerate, by Sonic Youth
3. Atomik Lust, by Super Furry Animals
4. Huddle Formation, by The Go! Team
5. No Cars Go, by The Arcade Fire

…or am I jinxing this a bit?

  1. Pistons looked determined Friday, that’s been missing… Suns looked tired

  2. Yeah - Detroit looked tough and badassed. W(ho)TF is Flip Murray!??

  3. He’s a chump. He’s been a seriously disappointing acquisition… I can’t explain what happened last night. Maybe he ate his wheaties, or maybe everyone has ONE killer game. That might have been his.
