Hoping we’ve come a long way since then.
On the phone:
Grandma: I just can’t stand doing yard work when it’s hot outside. The heat just gets me. I sweat like a … well, we used to say, ‘like a nig**r on election day.’
Me: Um, Grandma? Now we say ‘pig.’
Maybe Grandma should attend this funeral.

Yeah, I read about this funeral in the Detroit Free Press. Sadly, I just feel like it is one more PR stunt.

I disagree. I think that when African Americans are the ones attempting to symbolically ‘put to bed’ what is considered a racial slur, that it means something more. The ‘funeral’ sounds cheesy, but it’s the NAACP’s way, as they did with Jim Crowe.
