Time circuits on. Engine running. Flux Capacitor… fluxxing.

On Friday night, our A/C quit cooling. I was afraid that somehow we froze it up again, and turned it off to see if the thing would thaw out. We slept in the heat with the ceiling fans on high and woke up nice and damp (I know you’re loving that mental picture).

Tested it again… still hot. I considered calling the Landlord at that point, but we were off to a movie and knew he was at work. Called him after the movie and he was very rude to me about waiting to call him, saying it probably wouldn’t get fixed until Monday and what exactly did I expect him to do about it? OH. did I want to have WORDS with that man. You don’t even know! But somehow, uncharacteristically, I bit my tongue. (Jerk.) And so, after calling a few houses with ‘for rent’ signs, we embraced our second night without A/C, as temperatures inside headed over 80.

At one point I tried opening a window or two, hoping for a breeze. Our Dear Landlord had nearly all the window screens removed from the house for aesthetic purposes, and out of fear of Texas bugs, I rarely open them. This seemed like a cause worthy of a few bug bites, so I opened three of them just a couple inches. Those few inches were enough for our suicidal, cantankerous cat to squeeze her chubby body under that window (like a rat!). She was seriously about to jump from our 2nd story duplex onto the concrete driveway before I grabbed her tail. I hope she’s sore, ungrateful little animal. I wish you could have seen Josh, though. He freaked out like his child was jumping out of the window! So cute…

It turns out that in Texas, one’s A/C going out is generally considered a life and death situation. I mean, we don’t want to get heat stroke, people! As a result, there are more A/C repair places available for weekend calls than one ornery landlord might lead you to believe. I had a hard time sleeping and worried that the repair guy would come, replace the air filter and say something to the effect of, “You are idiots. Never own a house, you can’t even tie your shoes.” But it turned out to be the capacitor. I guess it wasn’t fluxxing.

The night D went into labor with our first daughter, our AC went out.

I remember that night VIVIDLY…I try to tell myself it is because of the wonderful event, but down deep I know it was because of the trauma of no AC in the Texas July.
