Daylight Savings Time

On the left, a river of white stretches from the horizon to my vantage point. On the right, a river of red forms an unbroken train for as far as I can see.

Why is there so much traffic this late in the day?

The day is over. The sun has set. It shouldn’t set this early but it has. Last week it was normal and this week it is not. The day is over. The government said so.

I grew up without daylight savings time. There was no ’springing forward’ in the spring, nor was there ‘falling back’ in the fall. Arizona does not honor daylight savings time because its residents are thankful when the sun sets in the summer. They do not wish for another hour of what the rest of the country views as blessed light. To the residents of Arizona it is just another hour of cursed heat.

The hour that sunsets occur change a little bit, but gradually and without the shock of transitioning from one day of light to the next of dark.

Yesterday I left work at 6:30 and it was pitch black outside. It was as if the sun never came up that day, yet everybody was outside. Usually when I leave work around that time, the sky is still purplish orange, and traffic has significantly died down.

I believe that daylight savings time has destroyed everybody’s equilibrium.

There was no vehicular accident on 635, yet the streams of cars creeped along at the pace of a snail. (Or a snail’s pace, your call.)

What other reason could there be this late in the day early at night?

No, the only reason could be daylight savings time. It is evil and wicked.

Arizona continues with their non observance. Now when I call my mom and dad I have to remember that we are only one hour ahead now, not two like last week. I used to be able to call around 10 or 11. Now I will have to readjust, because they are old and go to sleep early and wake up at like 4 in the morning (because they are old and this is apparently what the elderly do).

Yet I envy them and their uninterrupted balance of day and night.

  1. When it’s breakfast time, my dog doesn’t believe in Daylight Savings, either. I need to send her to Arizona.
