Whatever, Martha!

Whatever, Martha!

If you’re like me, you have a love/hate relationship with Martha Stewart. She (or her staff) have lots of great creative ideas, but I’m totally with my mom when she laments, “why does she have to be perfect at EVERYTHING?” Gardening, cooking, crafts, organization, cleaning, pets, laundry, weddings, kids. You name it, Martha has done it and called it a “good thing.”

A few years ago I tried watching her show, Martha, for a while, but eventually I realized the perfection of it all was making me depressed. Cue a new show on FLN - hosted by Martha’s daughter, Alexis, and her Sirius radio partner, Jennifer. Aptly titled Whatever, Martha! (after their radio show, Whatever! with Alexis and Jennifer), the twosome spend a half hour watching an episode of Martha, making fun of the diva, her mannerisms and projects. Think Mystery Science Theater 3000 for cupcake demonstrations. FLN has a few clips here (which they’ve also allowed me to embed, below -thx, Margot). My favorite one so far?

[Martha is icing cupcakes with kids on the tv; Alexis and Jennifer are playing along on their set.]
Alexis: I think that I never got a cupcake in my whole LIFE at home.
Jennifer: Would you like to eat one now?
Alexis: No… See what happens? You learn good eating habits.

The show officially premieres next Tuesday at 9pm.

I watched the clips and it looks hilarious! But, does Alexis have a good relationship with her mother?

  2. From what I saw, she does, which is how she is able to get her mother to sign off on a show like this. I read a quote from Martha herself, where she said something like, “I am very serious, but I also have a sense of humor.” Perfect in those ways, too, I guess :)

  3. I’m with you, I’ve watched her daytime show a few times and it always makes me feel worse, than better. This, I might be able to get into.

But as a business owner now myself - I certainly do have to admire the woman’s business savvy. She and Oprah have the branding thing down.

I watched the first episode and it wasn’t as funny as I thought. Maybe b/c the only funny parts were the one’s i’d already seen in the clips. And I kinda wanted them to talk more to the viewers…not just randomly watching Martha episodes….I don’t know. I’ll try another new episode and see.

  5. Michelle, I think you’re right that the majority of the funny parts in the clips were all from the premiere. I think there were two episodes shown back to back - did you see the second? I found it hilarious how much Alexis jokes about sexual innuendo - like the twine with a hole? You want Martha’s legs wrapped around your waist? Josh and I both laughed at that one.

Yes, that part was funny…and kinda surprising!
